Living in Cyprus

Cyprus is a beautiful island located in the north eastern basin of the Mediterranean Sea at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and Africa. Because of its location, Cyprus has developed into an important financial and tourist centre. The total area of Cyprus is a little less than 10,000 sq.km, and the island's population is approximately 750,000.

Cyprus well known as "The Island of Love and Beauty" has a lot more to offer. The history of Cyprus is clearly visible everywhere with numerous archaeological sites and museums.

The landscape of the island consists of mountains, traditional villages stunning countryside, hidden coves and perfect beaches , all of which are bathed in sunshine for a good 340 days a year making Cyprus an inviting paradise to all.

The native language is Greek, but English is now a widely used second language, with road signs, shops, restaurants, all giving details in both languages. Driving is on the left as in the UK. Low crime rate, low cost of living, and friendly people, make Cyprus the ideal place to start a new life.

Climate

Cyprus has a Mediterranean climate with hot dry summers from June to September and rather variable winter from November to March. The autumn and spring are therefore short and of a rapid change.

Paphos has the finest climate on the island with cooler summers and short mild winters.

In the winter you can ski on the mountains or sunbathe on the beach, all in one day.

Employment

Opportunities to work on Cyprus are many and varied, EU Nationals can work on the Island without hindrance, although as a courtesy and to help in everyday life, we would suggest a basic understanding of Greek is learnt. You can join a profession, bring your business over from the UK or select a whole new direction for your career when you get over there. There are UK citizen associations which can help you find work, and adapt to your new surroundings. You will be required to pay local taxes if you are resident.

The climate, infrastructure and location make Cyprus a perfect place to create and generate a business from. Many visitors carry on their mainline day to day business from the tranquillity of their veranda thanks to the modern and progressive communication links available, and many people establish businesses from the Island and simply work from their home in Paphos.

Living on an Island with such a rich, varied and plentiful heritage can be a wonderful experience. The high standard of living and the relatively low cost of living combine to produce a quality living environment for everybody. The lifestyle brings with it a healthy remedy to many of the ailments you may have.

Electricity and Water supply connection are the responsibility of the owner (although we can help with this). The usage costs very much depend upon the type, construction, size of property and the family type using it, but typically the water board charge for 2 people living in an apartment will be Eur 17 - Eur 34 (bi-monthly) and the electricity bill is approximately Eur 85 - Eur 102 (bi-monthly) but varies upon use and air-conditioning provision etc.

The Cypriots love to indulge in their favourite pastime of "Social Eating". Whether a simple family meal on the veranda or enjoying one of a multitude of international cuisines, eating is a pleasure. Ingredients used are always of the highest quality and prepared by international chefs and local specialists.

A typical Cyprus Meze (a wonderful selection of Cypriot foods - up to 10 courses) will cost around Eur 15.00 and a typical European meal will cost around Eur 18.00 with wine. Clearly it depends upon where you decide to eat, and at many of the tourist area restaurants you will be offered set menus from only Eur 12.00 for three courses. However many residents and locals soon discover their own favourites at local tavernas and restaurants.
